Beverly Purcell-Guerraeditor's letter
by Beverly Purcell-Guerra

In this issue of DENVER WOMAN you’ll meet women who are taking control of their lives. One of them is our Profile, Colleen Abdoulah, who is president and CEO of Wide Open West (WOW!), a regional Internet, cable and telephone provider headquartered in Denver.

Putting her personal values into practice in the workplace and in her life, she leads a company that rates very highly with its customers, consistently receives awards for excellence from J.D. Power and Associates and is held in high esteem by its employees, with job satisfaction ratings of over 97 percent.

Our feature spotlights four women who have lost significant weight — from 60 to more than 100 pounds — and, more importantly, have kept the weight off. In the process, they have gained better health, self-esteem and quality of life. Read the inspiring stories that Lupe Reyther, Angela Stauffer, Colleen Gormley and Holley VanBenthuysen have to tell.

Role Model Julie Rose has not allowed a brain tumor (or an uncertain economy) to curtail her fund-raising activities on behalf of the Central City Opera Guild. She’s currently deep into preparations for its annual Denver Antiques Show and Sale, certain that customers will find great bargains in china, furniture, rugs and more.

Mark Baker and Priscilla Courdeaux have redecorated three homes in the four years of their marriage, but they are now comfortably settled into a loft in downtown Denver and loving the ambiance, the views and their nearness to urban attractions.

Women in Business introduces four outstanding accounting partners —Alison Dunnebecke, Melissa Hooley, Kim Higgins and Carol Lewis. They are skilled in different areas of a field that was once almost exclusively the domain of men, but is today attracting many women.

Read about artist Sushe Felix, who combines geometric and organic forms in her abstract paintings. Another artful blending is the tapas/sushi menu at Izakaya Den, one of Denver’s newest restaurants.

This issue also includes informative articles on insomnia, lung diseases, the mind-body connection and the importance of water conservation. And don’t miss the new trend pages with “gadgets for gals.”

For information on these and other topics, DENVER WOMAN brings you our Web site. Please visit us at www.denverwoman.com.

Have you ever tried to lose 5 pounds? How about 10? You know how hard it can be. Now imagine trying to lose 10 times that amount. The very idea of shedding 50 to 100 pounds is so daunting it’s enough to send even the most dedicated dieter scurrying for the cookie jar…

Role Model: BOWED BUT UNBEATEN - Julie Rose doesn’t let a brain tumor curtail her efforts for the Central City Opera Guild
Julie Rose has a hard time remembering dates.  Not the romantic kind. Numbers and words often have her guessing. When I went to meet her, she had placed neatly before her on her desktop a page with specific months and years scribbled on it in red ink.  They were important numbers she knew she would have to talk about in our interview, dates she couldn't recall on her own…

Family Issues: THE MIND-BODY CONNECTION - Appreciation of this relationship is coming to the fore in contemporary Western culture
Forty-plus years ago, during my stay-at-home-community-volunteer days, I lived in Crystal City, Texas, with my doctor husband, Bob Stauber, and four daughters.
During that time, I belonged to a “Study” Club and was asked to do a presentation on advances in medicine. The members no doubt thought I...
